Web Accessibility Training Sessions

OITA is providing general web accessibility info sessions to Rutgers staff. At the end of these sessions, attendees should be able to do the following:

  • Understand policies set by Rutgers regarding Web Accessibility.
  • Use scanning tools to test for accessibility issues on their websites.
  • Know how to do manual testing on sites for accessibility issues.
  • Understand common issues and how to fix them.
  • Learn how to include accessibility during early site development efforts.

If scheduled sessions conflict with your or your teams schedule, info-sessions can be provided by a scheduled face-to-face meeting or webinar with the IT Accessibility Team. Please contact us at accessibility@rutgers.edu.

Available Sessions

  • Sessions will be provided face-to-face with digital options to attend.
  • Copies of slides will be provided post session to all RSVP'd and attending members.
  • Video of previous will be made available at later date.
  • Other face-to-face presentations can be scheduled with the accessibility team, regardless of location.

Web Accessibility Info Session

In this session we will introduce Rutgers members to the the importance of Web Accessibility. This includes the change in focus over the past few years, the complaint and settlement that Rutgers University had with the Office for Civil Rights, the changes in policy, and the audits that followed. We will also introduce the Office of IT Accessibility (OIT), what services the office provides, and what the office hopes to gain from the community.

This session is vital for the members of Rutgers who are just being introduced to IT Accessibility.

Testing Websites for Accessibility

  • WEBEX: Wednesday July 10th from 1 - 3pm

In this session we will overview tools available for both for free and Rutgers employees to scan websites for accessibility issues. We will also teach proper techniques on how to do manual checking to find issues that scanners cannot pick up. This training is a preliminary stepping stone to Web Accessibility 101 for Programmers.

This training is important for members of Rutgers who create, or maintain Rutgers public websites. This includes content creators and developers.

Web Accessibility 101 for Programmers

Attendance to 'Testing Websites for Accessibility' is advised before attending this session.

In this session we will introduce members to the current rules and standards of Rutgers in regards to IT accessibility.  Majority of the session will be dedicated to common accessibility issues found on Rutgers based websites, and common solutions on how to fix them, and avoid them in future projects. Attendees are also welcome to present issues found within their own websites for questions and review.

This training is important for  members of web teams who create, oversee, and update overall frameworks and templates of Rutgers public facing websites.

Content Accessibility 101

In this session we will introduce members to the current rules and standards of Rutgers in regards to IT accessibility. Then majority of time will be dedicated to common accessibility issues found on Rutgers based websites and digital documents in regards to content, and common solutions to them. Attendees are also welcome to present issues found within their own work for questions and review.

This training is important for Rutgers members who curate and maintain content for Rutgers public websites.

Intro into Deque WorldSpace Comply

Attendance to 'Testing Websites for Accessibility' is advised before attending this session.

  • WEBEX: Wednesday August 7th from 1 - 3pm

In this session we will introduce web development teams in the functionality of Deque WorldSpace Comply as an automated accessibility testing tool. This will include how to create new projects for website scans, diving into the results of the scans, and editing scan metrics for more accurate results. Having access to Deque WorldSpace Comply is not mandatory for this training, and offices can request their own sandbox into the tool before, or after the training.

This training is important for Rutgers staff who wish to use Deque WorldSpace Comply to aid in their accessibility testing through an automated tool.

Microsoft Office Accessibility

  • WEBEX: Wednesday August 14th from 1 - 3pm

This section will explore IT accessibility in relation to Microsoft Office applications. Participants will explore how to make Microsoft files accessible; how common forms of assistive technology interact with Microsoft products; and how to scan for accessibility in Microsoft Office. Furthermore, participants are encouraged to present specific documents for discussion and consultation.

This training is important for Rutgers members who regularly create and distribute content for any academic or non-academic department.

Intro Into Screen Readers

  • LIVE: Monday August 19th in AB Lab 3 (room 1230) from 10am - 12pm
  • WEBEX: Wednesday August 21st from 1 - 3pm

This session will introduce participants to the most common and powerful screen readers in use today. Participants will have the opportunity to explore, and interact with screen readers; observe how different applications and programs interact with screen readers; and how to design content with screen readers in-mind. Additionally, the trainer will be available to provide feedback and consultation for specific departmental screen reader concerns.
