Connect your smart devices, streaming devices, gaming consoles, and wired desktops

Game consoles, smart TVs, streaming devices, some smart devices, and wired (ethernet) desktops can be connected to the Rutgers Residential Network (ResNet) which is available only in the Residence Halls. To connect your phone or laptop to the wireless network for use across all Rutgers buildings, please reference the instructions on how to connect to RUWireless Secure

To configure your device for Resnet, obtain your device MAC address and proceed to the ResNet Device Registration portal to register your device so it can access the network. Instructions on how to use the portal and how to locate your MAC Address for common devices can be found below. Please note, your device will only connect after it has successfully been registered via the portal.

Anyone connecting to the Rutgers Network must follow the Rutgers Acceptable Use Policy for Computing and Information Technology Resources [PDF]. If you are caught violating this policy, your connection may be terminated without warning.

Wired Devices

In order to connect a wired device to ResNet, you must have an ethernet cord connecting your device to the black or grey port in your room. If your device does not have an ethernet port you may purchase an adapter to use for a wired connection. In this case, please use the MAC Address of the adapter when using the portal.

Wireless Devices

For wireless-only devices, such as Google Home or Amazon Echo products, first connect it to the IOT wireless network.

Some devices may require your phone to be on the same network as your device to complete the setup process or change settings on your device. In this case you will have to add your phone in the Registration portal as well. Phones are only allowed to be on the IOT wireless network to assist with configuring your smart device, and must promptly be removed from the portal once the setup process is complete.

Note that prior to trying to connect a phone or tablet, you will have to go into the settings on your phone/tablet for the RUIOT network and turn off the Private Wi-Fi Address setting, if it is there.

Using the ResNet Device Registration Portal

  1. Go to the ResNet Device Registration portal on a device that is already connected to the internet.
  2. Login with your NetID and password.
  3. On the portal click Add Device. Then enter the device's MAC Address, a Name for the device, whether it is wired or wireless, and the Device type.

  4. Click Add and it will begin to search for your device. When it is found on the network, it will display that your device was added successfully. Note that this process may take a few minutes.
  5. If your device is not found on the network you will need to connect it via an ethernet cord for wired devices, or by connecting to the wireless network: RUIOT with password: resnetiot. Once connected, you must go back to the ResNet Device Registration portal and click Check Connections under the Pending Connection section to complete the registration process. Note that this process may take a few minutes.

  6. Your device must show up under the My Registered Devices section of the portal before it can connect to the ResNet network. If your device still can not connect, please contact the OIT Help Desk
