Windows Defender (for Windows) and Avira (for macOS) are available for use on personal equipment not owned by Rutgers.

    What is Windows Defender?

    Windows Defender is a suite of security utilities designed to protect the Windows Operating System. It includes but is not limited to:

    • Microsoft Defender Antivirus: A real-time, always-on antivirus protection that comes with Windows 10 and 11.
    • Microsoft Defender Smart Screen: If a website, application, or download is potentially malicious and could harm your computer, SmartScreen will warn you.
    • Windows Firewall: Helps prevents hackers or malicious software from gaining access to your PC through the internet or a network.

    What is Avira?

    • Avira is an antivirus protection system that protects your system from all Mac-related online threats (such as viruses, adware, and spyware) and prevents you from passing on PC viruses.
    • Avira is generally compatible with macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or higher.
    • Avira requires an active internet connection to download and maintain the most up-to-date threat detection.
    • This product should not be installed on university-owned equipment.
