Trainings and workshops

The Office of IT Accessibility (OITA) offers accessibility trainings to the all members of the Rutgers community and the general public. Here is a listing of all the available trainings we offer, our customized trainings (only available to Rutgers community), and other external trainings that may be of interest.

How to use a Screen Reader- NVDA

Remote | May 14  from 10:00 -11:00 a.m
Presenter will stay on the call for 30 minutes after to answer any additional questions.

This training will be an introduction of how to use a screen reader. Specifically we will be using NVDA. If you have a windows device, we recommend this training for you. We will be providing you with detailed instructions on how to test your websites, web content, and documents against 2 levels of screen reader users.

Participants are recommended to download NVDA, prior to attending.

How to use a Screen Reader- VoiceOver

This training will be an introduction of how to use a screen reader. Specifically we will be using VoiceOver. If you have an Apple device, we recommend this training for you. We will be providing you with detailed instructions on how to test your websites, web content, and documents against 2 levels of screen reader users.

VoiceOver is already installed on your Apple device. No further download is needed.

Making Social Media Accessible

Remote | July 9 from 10:00 – 11:00 am
Presenter will stay on the call for 30 minutes after to answer any additional questions

This training will provide basic information on how to make your content more accessible on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. We will be looking at common examples of content for each.

d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Sensitivity Training

Remote | Offered once a month (1 Hr)

This training is part of the Classroom Inclusivity Series. Participants who successfully complete the training will be awarded credit in competency 2 towards their badge.

This training will provide you with what you need to know when teaching a d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing student. You will leave with a better understanding of:

  • Deaf culture
  • Appropriate language use
  • Common accommodations and how to facilitate them
  • Resources for providing captioning and ways it can help all students
  • Top things students wished professors knew prior to starting their course
  • Top things to do to dramatically improve the accessibility and experience of d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in your course
  • How to infuse inclusive teaching practice and language to better promote a Deaf friendly environment

Sign up to our Digital Accessibility Network group in connect. We will be storing recordings of all out trainings on this site. In addition, we will be pushing out information about to make content accessible to this group.

Self-paced accessibility training

All Rutgers staff, faculty, and students have free access to Deque University, a library of self-paced accessibility trainings. Subjects include the basics of accessibility and disability etiquette, web accessibility, document accessibility and remediation, and more.
