What is data administration?

Data administration includes the definition, organization, supervision, and protection of data. This applies particularly, though not exclusively, to data resident in university data bases and data tables. The definition and organization functions are referred to as "information architecture."

What data administration services are offered by ACS?

All phases of data administration are addressed within ACS. Implementation services are included under Administrative Applications. Access services are outlined in Accessing Administrative Data. Data protection issues are addressed in Information Protection. The ACS Applications Systems location furnishes numerous examples of the systems implemented in concert with Data Administration.

In the Information Architecture area, ACS has a full-time Assistant Director for Data Administration. This directorate, in close consultation with the data custodian for an area; with the known users of the data and the ACS application team(s) involved, designs the data base(s) and/or data tables that will be created in support of an application. In addition to the selection and description of the elements of each table or data base segment, the linkages between various data base segments or data tables are defined and described. The design is then passed on to Data Base Administration and to the application support team for implementation.
