Using Jabber on the Rutgers Network

About Jabber

Rutgers IM is an open-source Instant Messaging (IM) service that provides secure, encrypted communications with other users logged into the Rutgers central IM server, making it more appropriate for sending sensitive information than standard Instant Messenger services. Rutgers IM uses the University NetIDs to identify people with whom you are talking, which prevents faking identities or hiding in anonymity. In addition, Rutgers IM includes features such as one-on-one instant messaging and temporary and permanent chat rooms.

The Office of Information Technology provides technical support for these chat software products:

Web-based Access, Windows and Macintosh:

Windows 2000-XP and UNIX:

Macintosh OS X:

  • Adium X
  • Note: iChat, the Macintosh OS X 10.4 built-in Jabber program, is not supported at this time.
